When To Plant Cannas In Ks

Cannas are among the most colorful summer bulbs—as flamboyant as their tropical American ancestry—with ruffled spikes tapering to refined buds. With their great reedy canes and palmy foliage, cannas would be magnificent even if they never bloomed. However, they keep pumping out colorful flowers from late spring or early summer to frost. When most flowers can’t take the heat of late July and early August, cannas thrive.

Not only are cannas colorful but their contrasting foliage can create some interest in the garden. .

The Planting Zones for Cannas

Golden canna (Canna flaccida), also known as bandanna-of-the-Everglades, also thrives in the wetlands and watery locales of USDA zones 8 through 10. Planting Cannas in the GardenAfter selecting the mature size and flower color of your cannas, prepare a sunny, wind-sheltered and well-drained garden bed for the rhizomes by digging and removing weeds, sod, rocks and plant debris. Space dwarf cannas 18 inches apart; 3- to 5-foot-tall cannas 2 feet apart; and the largest cultivars 3 feet apart.

Growing Cannas in PotsIf your garden soil is poor, salty or very alkaline, consider building a raised bed or growing your cannas in containers. In USDA zones 7 and 8, add a thick layer of mulch over the garden bed to protect the canna rhizomes from winter's freezing temperatures. .

Growing Tropical Canna

Tropical plants are changing the palette and character of summer gardens, and lush, leafy canna lilies are leading the charge. "Cannas have always been the most popular tropical plant in Northern gardens," says James Waddick, a Kansas City gardener who grows many cannas in his own back yard. ‘Pretoria’ is a flashy canna with orange blooms and bright green-and-yellow-striped leaves; ‘Bronze Beauty’ has deep wine-red foliage and red flowers.

Victorian gardeners used cannas with a flourish, growing them like fantastic green geysers at the center of elaborate annual flowerbeds. Most gardeners grow cannas from rhizomes, which can be planted in spring as soon as it's comfortable to be in the garden in shirtsleeves. .

The exotic foliage is stunning with its multiple hues of red, orange, yellow and green where no two leaves are alike. To top it off is a beautiful tangerine-colored flower. Interesting Notes about Canna:When drama and color are needed for the container or garden, Canna does the job.

By association the large leaves and colorful flowers bring a touch of tropical to the scenery and make a great contrast when combined with smaller-leaved companions. They are easy to grow and somewhat flexible in their preferences of moist, well-drained soils and full sun.
